Darrang district administration gears up for Assembly election

Though the Election Commission of India (ECI) is yet to issue the formal notification to the election of the Assam Legislative Assembly, 2021, yet the district administration of Darrang has taken all arrangements in advance to conduct the ensuing election in a peaceful, transparent and fair manner.

MANGALDAI: Though the Election Commission of India (ECI) is yet to issue the formal notification to the election of the Assam Legislative Assembly, 2021, yet the district administration of Darrang has taken all arrangements in advance to conduct the ensuing election in a peacefuDarrangdistrict ,Assembly electionl, transparent and fair manner.

Deputy Commissioner of Darrang-cum-District Election Officer Dilip Kumar Borah, accompanied by Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan, on Tuesday visited the Mangaldai College campus for setting up of the strong room, counting halls and distribution and receiving centres for Electronic Voting Machines and thoroughly supervised the condition of the halls and the campus. Additional Deputy Commissioner Nabajyoti Oja, Election Officer Hemashree Khanikar and Principal of Mangaldai College, Dr. Khagendra Kumar Nath also accompanied the Deputy Commissioner during his visit. Due to non-availability of required halls and other infrastructure, the government has been using the college campus for election purposes since long. The playground of the college will also be used for the transport cell.

Talking to The Sentinel, Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah said that in view of COVID protocol and as per the guidelines of the ECI, this time two halls with seven tables in each would be used as counting halls for each Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC). Earlier, one counting hall with 14 tables had been used in the counting of votes. Similarly, there will be one strong room for one LAC. Besides this, there will be separate arrangements for distribution and receipt of the EVMs, transport cell, food cell, control room, media hall and medical hall.

On the other hand, as a part of the Systematic Voter's Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) which is the flagship programme of the ECI on voter education, spreading voter awareness and promoting voter literacy in the country, Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah interacted with the students of the college assembled during the Saraswati Puja celebration and appealed to them to exercise their democratic right to make the democracy a healthy democracy. He also appointed the general secretary of Mangaldai College Students' Union, Bhaskar Borah as the Campus Ambassador of election and greeted him with a phulam Bihuwan. The enthusiastic students assured to take part in exercising their democratic right.
