GUWAHATI: Offline classes have been suspended at the Darrang Jawahar Navodya Vidyalaya in Assam after the principal tested positive for COVID-19.

Notably, the offline classes at the school will be discontinued starting Monday (January 17) says the deputy commissioner of Assam's Darrang district

Pranab Kumar Sarmah, the Darrang DC and chairman of the JNV's Vidyalaya Management Committee (VMC), has ordered the district's only residential school, which is run by the HRD Ministry, to suspend its offline sessions.

This decision was made to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among the school's students and employees after the institution's principal, PB Sobhanavalli (59), tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

The principal came to the school on January 9 from Kerala, her home state the principal, however, apparently engaged in official work without being quarantined, potentially exposing her fellow teachers, non-teaching employees, and pupils at the school.

"The school's principal has made a supplication to me describing the circumstance, and in light of its gravity, the school's offline lessons have been suspended for a week beginning Monday," Darrang DC Pranab Kumar Sarmah stated.

Darrang JNV has become the third school in the district to discontinue offline lessons within a week, following Mangaldoi Kendriya Vidyalaya and Ganesh Kunwari Janajati HS School.

Recently The chief minister told in a press conference that both private and public schools have been instructed to close until January 30.

If the number of covid cases continues to climb, the Health Department will ensure that schools up to Class 8 in additional areas are shuttered, according to the minister.

Offline instructional learning activities for Courses 9, 10, and 11 will be rotated on a weekly basis, with students attending classes three days per week. Mr Sharma noted that while Class 12 students face board exams, offline education will continue as usual.
