DBT scheme awareness meeting held in Nagaon to benefit ration cardholders

NAGAON: A meeting was held at Nagaon District Library Auditorium to raise awareness about the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme among fair price shop dealers and village panchayat cooperative societies in Nagaon district on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by Kaushik Rai, Minister of Food, Civil Supply and Consumer Affairs, Government of Assam. In his welcome address, District Commissioner Debashish Sarma highlighted the importance of the DBT scheme. The meeting began with the Assam State song.

Mriganka Shekhar Hazarika, a senior official from the Food, Civil Supply and Consumers Affairs Department, Government of Assam, explained the details of the scheme through a visual presentation.

Rupak Sarmah, MLA of Nagaon-Batadroba constituency, emphasized the significance of ration cards and urged the fair price shop dealers and cooperative societies to ensure that beneficiaries receive their rightful benefits without any hassle.

Minister Kaushik Rai announced that from November, all beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act, 2013, in Nagaon district will be able to purchase masoor dal, sugar, and salt at subsidized rates under the DBT scheme. Each ration cardholder will receive 1 kg of masoor dal, 1 kg of sugar, and 1 kg of salt per card, packaged in poly packs with government-approved branding and logo. Beneficiaries will pay Rs 69 per kg for masoor dal, Rs 38 per kg for sugar, and Rs 10 per kg for salt.

The beneficiaries will be able to purchase these commodities from fair price shops using ePOS machines on designated ‘Anna Seva Din’ (Food Service Day). The Minister expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister for launching this scheme, which will benefit the poor and vulnerable sections of society.

The meeting concluded with the National Anthem. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Jitu Goswami, MLA of Barhampur constituency, Diplu Ranjan Sarma, MLA of Samaguri constituency, Sashi Kanta Das, MLA of Raha constituency, and other officials from the Food, Civil Supply and Consumers Affairs Department, an official press note added here.
