SILCHAR: With the death of Bajlul Hekim Laskar, the death toll of Hindustan Paper Corporation, the defunct PSU, crossed the 100 mark. Laskar, 63, died of kidney disorder. The Joint Action Committee of Recognised Unions of Cachar and Jagiroad Paper Mills (JACRU) in categorical terms blamed both the Union and State governments for the untimely death of Laskar.

In a press statement, Manabendra Chakraborty and Ananda Bardoloi, president and general secretary of JACRU said, the government was solely responsible for the death of these 101 employees of this PSU. For the last 62 months, the employees have not received any salary. They said that during Sarbananda Sonowal's five years term, both the paper mills in Assam saw the death of 85 employees and during Himanta Biswa Sarma's tenure another 16 employees died. Chakraborty and Bardoloi said, the government could not shrug off its responsibility as it had utterly failed to pay the employees their justified dues. Maintaining that the Chief Minister Sarma was instrumental in inking a treaty with the unions on September 28, 2021 that promised an early disbursement of all the dues of the employees, the JACRU leaders said, the implementation of the treaty had not advanced an inch further. They said that their fight for justice would continue till the death of the last employee.
