LAKHIMPUR: An open debate competition for the personnel of Assam Police was organized on Wednesday in North Lakhimpur. The debate competition was organized by Lakhimpur Police in collaboration with Lakhimpur Commerce College at its seminar hall.

The competition was inaugurated by Dr Lohit Hazarika, Principal of the college, and it was chaired by Ashabur Rahman, advocate Gauhati High Court and an eminent orator of yesteryears. Senior advocate Rajib Gogoi of North Lakhimpur, senior scribe and activist Farhana Ahmed and former president of NL Press Club, Surajeet Bhuyan attended the debating competition as judges.

The topic of the debate 'According to house it is possible for the police to proceed investigation smoothly without violating the human rights of the accused' drew participation from serving police personnel from various police stations and outposts of Lakhimpur district. A total of 18 participants took part in the competition.

Robin Bora, who debated for the motion, was adjudged as the best debater in the competition. Diganta Saikia, who argued against the motion, was declared second best while the third position jointly went to Palash Pratim Gogoi and Debajeet Borah, both speaking against the motion. The debate competition for the police personnel was attended by Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police Dr Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa, Additional SP Runa Neog and other officers from the Lakhimpur Police.

The entire competition was held under the management of Sazzad Hussain, an eminent columnist-cum-Head of the Department of English, Lakhimpur Commerce College.
