Decision on reopening of schools and colleges on August 25-26: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: With the entire state waiting with bated breath for news regarding the reopening of schools and other institutions in Assam, minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a concrete decision in the regard shall be taken on August 25-26.

As per Sarma, the state's education machinery is revving up its engine should the Centre give its nod of approval for a September 1 reopening.

Talking to media persons, Sarma said that the preparations are on in full swing -- those associated with the education sector are getting COVID-19 tests done and feedback is being given by the concerned stakeholders.

Ahead of the reopening of schools, each teacher, professor, and every other employee associated with the education of the state shall be compulsorily tested for the COVID-19.

"From the 21st of this month till August 30, all the employees associated with the education sector shall be compulsorily tested for the COVID-19 for the well-being of the students", Sarma announced in front of the press recently.

However, a task force that constitutes noted educationists of the State shall discuss and deliberate upon the issue on August 25-26, after which a decision on the reopening of educational institutions shall be taken, Sarma stated.

Meanwhile, teachers and other employees of the sector have already been asked to return their places of employment as a measure to keep things ready should regular classes be commenced in September.

With states and union territories expressing reservations about opening educational institutes, the Unlock 3.0 guidelines issued by the MHA said schools, colleges, and coaching institutions will remain closed till August 31.

Several states had been hesitant to open schools with many indicating that they could think of allowing institutions to function only in September.

Assam, meanwhile, has been eyeing a September 1 date to bring the students back to the campuses. However, the state government must first wait for the Centre to give its nod of assent. In all likelihood, the decision in this regard shall be notified towards the end of the 'Unlock 3.0' in the state.
