NUMALIGARH: The Nambor-Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary is well known for its rich biodiversity. Various factors like deforestation and over exploitation of natural resources have caused environmental degradation.

Illegally run saw mills (logging), expansion of tea gardens and encroachment of forest areas for habitant or agricultural purposes are causing damage to the natural fauna and flora. In most of the border areas of Golaghat and Karbi Anglong like Toklangpu, Koilamati, Bogijaan and others, massive deforestation is going on. The massive destruction of natural resources and deforestation are not unknown to the forest department. It is alleged that some personnel of the forest department directly or indirectly have connections with the timber smugglers due to which the timber smugglers continue to run their illegal business without any fear of being caught.

But there are honest officers and personnel in the forest department too. On Friday, Pushpadhar Borgohain, Forest Range Officer of Golaghat, received input about a vehicle carrying logs. He immediately deployed a team and set up a check-point near Dhansiri Bridge at Arengapara to track down the vehicle. But with the heavy traffic during evening hours, the vehicle carrying the logs managed to flee from the scene. However, the deployed forester chased the truck and finally managed to stop it near Bengenekhuwa area.

The team of foresters of Golaghat forest division succeeded to seize the 407 truck laden with illegal logs. As per information received, the logs were carried from a bordering area of Golaghat-Karbi Anglong. The driver and handyman of the vehicle managed to escape by taking advantage of the darkness. According to forest officials, the logs are of valuable trees and the market value of the logs will be not less than Rs 40,000. The seized vehicle (registration no AS-05-B-5066) is currently in the custody of Golaghat forest division.
