Two youths from Lakhimpur kick-start bicycle journey to Dispur to submit memorandum

LAKHIMPUR: The State Government has allegedly failed to resolve the burning issues of the safai karmi communities of the State like Basfor, Metor, Bhangi and Lalbegi.
Under such circumstances, two youths activists from the safai karmi communities kick-started a bicycle journey to Dispur on Friday in order to submit a memorandum with a charter of five demands to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Governor Prof Jagadish Mukhi demanding for the immediate resolution of the long-pending and burning issues of the safai karmis and their communities.
These youths are social workers Dilip Basfor, son of Naresh Basfor, resident of Ward No. 2 and Roky Basfor, son of Santosh Basfor, resident of Ward No. 1, Nakari of North Lakhimpur town. On Friday, the two youths started their journey from the Dr BR Ambedkar statue premises, located in North Lakhimpur town near Lakhimpur District Judiciary campus. In this connection, an inaugural event was organized in the presence of the community people and dignitaries of the community organization with a view to extending good wishes to the youth activists. They will arrive at Dispur five days later, after completing almost a 450-km journey from North Lakhimpur to Guwahati by riding bicycle.
By submitting the memorandum, the youth activists will demand the Chief Minister and the Governor to stop contract system in engaging the safai karmis in the government departments, boards and corporations; to appoint candidates in the temporary, permanent posts of safai karmis only from Basfor, Metor, Bhangi, Lalbegi sub-communities, who have been engaged in cleaning works since the British era, to accord land pattas to the people of safai karmi communities, and to create an environment for them so that they can live an honourable life.
Notably, Dilip Basfor and Roky Basfor were designated for this venture in a public meeting of safai karmi communities, titled as Safai Karmi Jagaran Rajahuwa Sabha, held in North Lakhimpur on October 31.
