LAKHIMPUR: Demanding the revival of Nagaon and Cachar Paper Mills, altogether 11 political parties initiated agitational programme in Lakhimpur district on Wednesday.

In this regard, the district leaders and the members of the Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad, Raijor Dal, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), Aam Aadmi Party, Anchalik Gana Morcha, Nationalist Congress Party, RJD and LDP staged dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office of Lakhimpur district. By initiating the same protest programme, the political parties also strongly opposed to the sale of land located in Guwahati, owned by the Railway Department, by Rail-Land Development Authority to three businessmen at very low prices. During the demonstration, the protesters rent the air by shouting various slogans in support of their demand for the rejuvenation of the paper mills concerned and their opposition to the sale of the Railway Department's land.

Later, the protesting political parties submitted separate memoranda to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur regarding both issues. Through the memoranda, the political parties demanded the government to initiate administrative and legitimate steps against the sale of the Railway Department's land and to rejuvenate the paper mills operated by Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) following the example set by the Kerala State Government with regard to revival of the non-operational paper mills of that State.
