Demand to set up adequate number of Aadhaar enrolment centres in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: After making the Aadhaar Card mandatory for availing the benefits of various government schemes, most rural citizens in Lakhimpur district have faced serious problems due to non-possession of the same. Notably, these citizens, especially living in the outreach areas under the district, could not enrol their names for Aadhar number due to non-availability of Aadhaar enrolment centres in their locality and due to various problems, including the prolonged coronavirus pandemic situation.

Most of the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) in the district have faced problems in availing the benefits of the rural development scheme due to non-possession of Aadhaar number after the additional list of the scheme concerned was disclosed. Showing of Aadhaar Card as an ID proof has already been made mandatory for availing the PMAY benefit. This compelled the PMAY-G beneficiaries under Dangdhara Gaon Panchayat of Dhakuakhana subdivision to stage protest some days ago demanding establishment of Aadhaar enrolment centres under the Gaon Panchayat areas. There is still shortage of adequate number of Aadhaar enrolment centres in the outreach areas under North Lakhimpur subdivision of the district along with that of Dhakuakhana subdivision.

Regarding the issue, the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Dr. Jeevan B demanding for the setting up of Aadhaar enrolment centres at the panchayat offices of the district or at any other government establishment in view of people's convenience.

In the memorandum, Lakhimpur unit AASU president Pulokjyoti Borah and general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta said that the PMAY-G beneficiaries of the district had been instructed to attach Aadhaar number with other required documents within August 31 due to which the beneficiaries concerned were facing problems.

"Similarly, submission of Aadhaar card is mandatory for the students to obtain their scholarships too. But the district still does not have adequate number of Aadhaar enrolment centres. As a result, a major part of the student community is in perplexed condition at present," the memorandum stated. Under such circumstances, the organization demanded the Deputy Commissioner to arrange for adequate number of Aadhaar enrolment centres in the district immediately.
