Demand to stop illegal excavation of sand gravel in Buroi River

Biswanath Chariali: The people of greater Goshala area under Halem revenue circle in Biswanath district have demanded the immediate stop of the alleged illegal excavation of sand gravel at the source of the Buroi River.

According to allegations, a section of mahaldars has been excavating sand gravel towards the hillside of the said river using heavy machinery such as excavators, JCB and Flock Land. As a result, massive erosion has taken place in the villages like Karibil Bangali, Buroighat, Karuapathar, Karuabasti, Gamiri and Dulung gaon of the area. The affected people also raise allegations that properties and households of 40 families and a government primary school were eroded by the Buroi River during the last couple of years.

A public meeting was held recently at Brahmaputra Valley English School recently in which the local people expressed grave concern over the matter. The people also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Biswanath district and urged the administration to initiate early steps for the safety of around 20 villages nearby. They demanded to make public the Environment Impact Assessment report prepared by the Department of Forest. The condition of the Chandamari-Dulungmukh road has also become pathetic due to the frequent plying of heavy vehicles used for carrying sand gravel from the river. Meanwhile, a Protection Ranger of the Department of Forest, Bibhuti Majumdar visited the affected areas and took stock of the situation.
