DHEKIAJULI: High drama unfolded on Tuesday at the Amiyapur Gaon Panchayat office under the Dhekiajuli Development Block as the much-anticipated Panchayat formation and oath-taking ceremony were abruptly cancelled, sparking tension among party workers and locals.
According to official sources, the cancellation was ordered by Block Development Officer (BDO) Hemkanta Bora after six newly elected BJP-backed Panchayat members failed to appear at the venue by the scheduled time of 11:30 am. Only four Congress-supported members were reportedly present, creating a lack of quorum for proceeding with the event.
The sudden decision to cancel the oath-taking led to sharp reactions from Congress leaders and workers, who alleged that BDO Hemkanta Bora acted under the directive of Assam Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal. As protests intensified and the situation turned volatile, Rakshamari Police intervened and took the BDO into protective custody for questioning.
Speaking to the media later in the day, BDO Hemkanta Bora clarified that the decision to postpone the ceremony was based purely on procedural grounds due to the absence of the majority of elected members. He further assured that the Panchayat formation and oath-taking will be completed within the next 15 days.
