DIBRUGARH: An awareness programme on 'Gender Identity and Sexuality: The Queer Perspective' was organized by the student members of RAS (Responsible Anthropology Student) from the department of Anthropology, Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmall Kanoi (DHSK) College on May 23. Queer rights activist and co-founder of Drishti Rituparna Neog was invited as the resource person of the programme.

Delivering the speech, Rituparna spoke about the visibility and societal acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community, hierarchy of patriarchal society and empowerment of the feminism and also spoke about the importance of the body integrity. Rituparna recited two self-written poems which talked about self acceptance. Rituparna also talked about the struggle of self-acceptance being a member of the queer community and how the struggle of transgender people throughout life, within the family, educational institutions, work place and society looks like. Through the lecture, Rituparna emphasized the importance of variation among each individual and the inclusivity and safe space for queer identified children inside the educational premises. Rituparna also requested the principal to build gender neutral toilets in the college.

DHSK College principal Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia, vice-principal Dr Priyadev Goswami and faculties of various departments were present in the progamme. Besides hundreds of students from the host college, students from nearby colleges and Dibrugarh University also actively participated in the awareness programme.
