DHUBRI: Dhubri Kalibari Committee distributed khadi (handloom) bags with the slogan ‘Say no to plastic’ in Dhubri town on Sunday. In order to create awareness among the people, a public meeting was organized at the Kalibari premises followed by a rally with placard appealing not to use single-use plastic in any form.

Speaking in the meeting, Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Anant Lal Gyani appealed to the people to stop using single-use plastic in any form as this had multiple bad effects on the environment and also had the potential to affect humans and living beings as a whole.

“We must go for intensive campaign against single-use plastic items which is highly detrimental to health,” Gyani added. President of Kalibari Trust Board, Rabindra Nath Roy and Dhubri Sales Tax Superintendent, Subrata Chakraborty and many other speakers stressed creating awareness on plastic vigorously.

“We must go all out to throw away single-use plastic from our homes and offices by October 2, 2019 when the nation will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi,” the speakers said.

Talking to The Sentinel, a trustee member of Dhubri Kalibari Committee, Dipankar Mazumdar said that the mission to free the country from plastic would be possible if SHGs, civil society and individuals joined in. “We will leave no stone unturned to free Dhubri town from single- use plastic. The awareness against the use of single-use plastic will also help to keep the drain and town clean as it will cut down the garbage by 30 per cent,” Mazumdar added. The awareness meeting was held under the president ship of former Principal of Chilarai College, Golokganj, Dr. Pratima Neogi.
