DOOMDOOMA: 'It was the brand name of Assam Tea that kept the name of Assam intact in international arena just after the annexation of Assam by the British in the wake of the treaty of Yandaboo,' said Mayur Bora, while addressing the gathering as chief speaker in the diamond jubilee celebration of Assam Chah Karmachari Sangha (ACKS) at Kallol auditorium of Doomdooma College on Sunday. 'While the Britishers assimilated Assam with Bengal under the new name as North Eastern province for the sake of convenience of administration, stiff resistance came from the British planters itself as it failed to retain its market share in the world tea market in absence of its brand name 'Assam Tea'. Lauding ACKS for its ability to remain intact to even after expiry of 75 years since it was formed on February 9, 1947 and carry out its trade union activities relentlessly for the interest of its employees, Bora said that most of the organisations ultimately play into the hands of the management for its inherent weakness to remain united.
