DIBRUGARH: The 24-hour Dibrugarh district bandh call given by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Dibrugarh district unit in protest against police atrocities during raid in Swahid Bhavan, the office of the AASU, and subsequent detention of 12 AASU activists – was spontaneous and passed off peacefully. Most of the business establishments were closed and plying of sub-urban buses remained off the road.

AASU general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah issued a statement demanding unconditional release of all AASU members within 24 hours and cautioned to intensify the protest if their demands get no response. Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police, Shwetank Mishra by issuing a legal notice u/s 152 Cr. P.C 1973, on December 25 to AASU secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah, ordered him to withdraw the bandh call and cooperate in maintaining peace keeping ongoing Christmas and New Year's eve celebration in the district and various recruitment and academic exams. Referring to court verdicts of the Supreme Court and high courts of Kerela and Guwahati, Mishra warned that the 'illegal and unconstitutional' bandh call, if not withdrawn immediately, strict legal action would be taken under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.

The college union election at Dibru College on Friday turned into a battlefield when both AASU and Assam Yuba Parishad, the youth wing of AGP and AVBP, attacked each other, allegedly with sharp weapons, following announcement of election results. The police intervened and sent all the injured to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for treatment and somehow brought the situation under control. The situation turned worse when police raided Swahid Bhavan with no prior sign or warning and arrested 12 AASU activists . All the arrested AASU activists were brought to Sadar Police Station and kept in police custody..

The situation in the district is tense but under control. The administration has taken all precautionary measures in each and every strategic point in the district in maintaining law and order.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AYP) president Lurin Jyoti Gogoi condemned police atrocities on AASU members and held police responsible for such a situation. Speaking to media persons, Gogoi said, "Police failed to deal with the situation in a disciplined way and arrested the AASU members by raiding Swahid Bhavan."
