DIBRUGARH: The 3-day Dibrugarh District Day got off to a colourful start on Friday. The Dibrugarh District Day is being organized for the first time to celebrate the birth of Dibrugarh district. On October 2, 1971 Dibrugarh was carved out from greater Lakhimpur district and made a separate district.

The 3-day Dibrugarh District Day celebration kicked off with a colourful cultural procession which began from the Chowkidinghee playground. State cultural affairs minister Bimal Borah, local MLA Prasanta Phukan, Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu, Superintendent of Police Shwetank Mishra and prominent citizens of the town participated in the rally.

Vintage cars and old horse drawn stagecoaches also formed the part of the procession adding to the attraction. An exhibition was also held to commemorate the occasion. Other events included a dog show, an open quiz on the topic 'Let's know about Dibrugarh', an interactive session with poets and literary figures. An official t-shirt for the 3-day Dibrugarh District Day celebration was also unveiled on the occasion. A cultural programme named 'Ture Mure Alokore Jatra' has been scheduled for the evening.

"Today is a proud day for the people of Dibrugarh. We are celebrating Dibrugarh District Day for the first time. I appeal to every citizen to participate in the three-day celebrations and become a part of the historic occasion," Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu said.

A host of events have been lined up for the next two days of the event, including bicycle rally, badminton and table tennis competition for under-11 and under-13 boys and girls, extempore speech, indigenous sports, water sports, documentary show on Dibrugarh, women's football, free health camps among others.

On the concluding day, which also happens to be Gandhi Jayanti, a cleanliness drive will be taken out on the municipal areas of Dibrugarh town. A souvenir on the history of Dibrugarh will also be released to commemorate the occasion.
