DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) initiated a special drive to remove unauthorized hoardings and banners advertising tobacco products across the city.

The initiative aligns with both national and state-level anti-tobacco laws, including the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, which prohibits the advertisement of tobacco products in public spaces.

Many of these hoardings were found near markets, schools, and bus stops, areas frequented by vulnerable sections such as youth and children. Their removal is aimed at curbing exposure to content that promotes unhealthy habits.

"This is part of our ongoing mission to create a cleaner, safer, and healthier Dibrugarh. Tobacco adver-tisements are not only illegal but also harmful to society, especially to the younger generation," a DMC official said.

Citizens have widely welcomed the move, praising the DMC for taking concrete action against visual pollution and public health threats. The campaign is also a reminder of the municipality's broader vision to make Dibrugarh a model city under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The DMC also issued warnings to advertisers and shop owners, stating that strict penalties will be en-forced for future violations. More such enforcement drives are expected in the coming weeks.

The initiative highlights the critical role civic bodies play in shaping not only cleaner cities but also healthier communities for future generations.
