DIBRUGARH: The residents are facing a harrowing time to dispose their household wastes owing to non-systematic functioning of door to door waste collection system in Dibrugarh. According to locals, the door to door collection of household waste was given to some NGOs but these NGOs are not doing their work in a proper manner.

"Some of the workers who worked under the NGOs for household waste collection don't know how to behave with the people. We pay Rs 100 every month but some of them didn't come to our house for waste collection," alleged Ramen Das, a resident.

He further alleged, "The NGO which was given the charge by the DMB to collect household wastes from the particular area are not doing their work systematically. The Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB) should look after the matter and take urgent steps to solve the matter."

The residents are annoyed with such rude behaviour of the NGO members who come to collect waste from houses. "Sometimes they do not come to our houses to collect the daily waste from our dustbins. The majority of the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that collect waste in Dibrugarh were granted licences through tendering for a fee of Rs 100. But my question is when we are paying the urban tax and Municipal tax then why we are paying another fees for collection of our household waste?" alleged Raju Singh.

Municipal workers in Assam recently staged a three-day protest demanding regularisation of their service and timely salary payments. It seems that the NGO workers also didn't come to collect the household waste during the All Assam Municipal workers' protest.

"The DMB should blacklist such NGOs which are not properly doing their work. Household waste should be collected daily but some of them failed to do," said another resident.

When The Sentinel contacted with one of the ward commissioners of DMB regarding the issue, he said the strike was done by the workers who worked under DMB. Their strike was unjustifiable. "We have received several complaints against the NGO members from the residents due to their rude behaviour. Our board will take action against the NGOs," he said.
