Dibrugarh to be Developed into Progressive and Modern Town: CM Sarbananda Sonowal

Dibrugarh: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of the Brahmaputra River Front Development Project in Dibrugarh. The Rs 46.54 crore beautification project of the riverfront of the Brahmaputra will be carried out on a 750-meter stretch along the river bank. Public infrastructures, recreational parks, gardens, sports facilities, open air theatre and swimming pool will be constructed under the project.

Claiming it to be a historic occasion for the people of Dibrugarh town, Sonowal said that the project would push Dibrugarh into one of the major tourist hotspots of the Northeast.

“The historic Dibrugarh town was developed as a commercial hub by the British. The town is 180 years old but it has not been able to grow as fast as it should have due to neglect by earlier governments. We have taken it as our responsibility to develop it as one of the progressive and modern towns of the region,” the Chief Minister said.

He further said that the ambitious Brahmaputra Expressway project from Sadiya to Dhubri would be taken up in the near future along with the scientific dredging of the Brahmaputra river. Sonowal also simultaneously laid the foundation of the Dibrugarh drainage sub-project under Tranche-2 and the project facility center of the Water Resource Department. The Asian Development Bank- funded project for improving the drainage system of Dibrugarh town is expected to solve the perennial waterlogging problem of the town permanently.

Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta, who was present on the occasion, said that a guest house equipped with all modern facilities would be constructed near the Brahmaputra bank at a cost of Rs.3.10 crore.

Dibrugarh MP Rameswar Teli, Lakhimpur MP, Pradan Baruah , Prasanta Phukan, Rituparna Baruah, Bolin Chetia and Sanjay Keshan, MLAs of Dibrugarh, Lahowal, Sadiya and Tinsukia LAC respectively, Chief Executive Officer of Flood and River Erosion Management Agency of Assam (FREMAA), Nitin Khade, Principal Secretary, Water Resources Department, Hemanta Narzary, Dibrugarh DC Laya Madduri were among those present on the occasion.
