District Kisan Mela focuses on steps to double farmers' income

Tezpur: A day-long District Kisan Mela was organized by KVK, Sonitpur, Napam, on March 1 at Ban Theatre, Tezpur. The Head of KVK, Sonitpur, Dr PC Deka, welcomed the farmers, participants and dignitaries to the event. The students of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat undergoing Rural Agricultural Work Experience Programme (RAWEP) stationed at KVK, Sonitpur, performed a chorus in the inaugural session.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. RK Saud, Associate Director of Extension Education, AAU, Jorhat, highlighted some of the extension activities performed by AAU for the benefit of the farming community. Addressing the gathering, Dr. KM Buzarbaruah, Vice-Chancellor, AAU, Jorhat, spoke about the agricultural scenario of Assam and steps to be taken for doubling the farmers' income by 2022. He opined that integrated farming system with combinations of crop, livestock, fishery and value addition would definitely serve the purpose of doubling farmers' income at the stipulated time.

MP of Tezpur, RP Sarma advocated for organic farming and advised the farming community to take agriculture as a business mode. The Minister of Irrigation, Revenue and Disaster Management, Bhabesh Kalita focussed on the different schemes taken up by the present Central and State governments for the benefit of the farming community. He also advised the farmers to take help of the Krishi Vigyan Kendras as they were doing commendable job for economic uplift of the farming community.

Along with the programme, an agricultural exhibition and a horticultural show-cum-competition were also organized. In the exhibition, 15 government and non-government organizations along with SHGs participated and showcased their activities. About 156 participants joined in the horticultural show-cum-competition which was categorized in 16 sections.

The horticultural show-cum-competition was coordinated by Arifa Momtaz Begum, SMS (Community Science), Sanjukta Saikia, SMS (Plant Protection) and Angana Sarma, SMS (Horticulture) and it was opened for public by Prakash Ch. Bora DAO, Sonitpur. Around 650 farmers and farm women from various parts of the district attended the programme.
