DLSA, Lakhimpur organized Awareness meet on disclosure of sexual harassment victims

LAKHIMPUR: District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Lakhimpur on Saturday organized an awareness programme on the ‘Disclosure of identity of the victims of sexual harassment, particularly by media’ and on ‘Fundamental Duties (Article 51-A)’.

The event was held at the conference hall of the Lakhimpur Zila Parishad office covering the media persons of Lakhimpur district officers and employees of the Child Protection Unit of Lakhimpur and other stakeholders. The event began with the lighting of ceremonial lamps by the Superintendent of Lakhimpur District Jail, Jit Kumar Doley and DLSA, Lakhimpur secretary Bichitra Doley. Senior Para-Legal Volunteer Abu Sayeed Khan explained the objective of the programme and highlighted the works and activities of DLSA, Lakhimpur.

DLSA, Lakhimpur secretary Bichitra Dutta and senior journalist-cum-Lakhimpur District Journalist Association (LDJA) working president Kumud Baruah took part in the programme as resource persons. Bichitra Dutta extended her discussion on the stipulated topic on the basis of the Supreme Court verdict on Nipun Saxena versus Union of India (2019) case and the guidelines of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. She also held discussion on the Fundamental Duties of the citizens incorporated in the Constitution of India. On the other hand, Kumud Baruah made an elaborate analysis of the topic highlighting the role played by the contemporary media regarding the issue following the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. In this regard, he threw light on the strong rule played by the Lakhimpur district media persons for the true realization of the guidelines concerned.

In connection, Child Protection Officer Smriti Borah Dutta explained the objectives and activities of One Stop Centres (OCS) which are intended to support women affected by violence and facing physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and economic abuse, irrespective of age, class, caste, education status, marital status, race and culture.

Taking part in the programme, journalist Ranjit Kakati, LDJA secretary Manoj Borpatra Gohain and Superintendent of the Lakhimpur district Jail, Jit Kumar Doley delivered speech highlighting different aspects of the topic of the awareness programme. In the same programme, which was anchored by CWC member Badan Kaliata, an aspiring programme titled ‘Campaign for Reformative Counselling of Prisoners’ was also launched. DLSA, Lakhimpur will administer the programme in collaboration with the District Jail Authority and District Social Welfare Office.
