DOOMDOOMA: “The inspiration for sacrifice for children comes from love in case of a mother while for a father, it comes from his sense of responsibility towards them,” said renowned writer Syed Abdul Malik. It was proved to be true by a humble duty-bound father Deben Nath of Karanga near Jorhat on Silpi Divas when he came all the way from Jorhat to Doomdooma to receive a prize on behalf of his daughter Mrinali Nath in an essay competition.

Doomdooma Sakha Lekhika Samaroh Samity held an essay competition on all Assam level in which Sashwati Kashyap (Sonapur College), Mrinali Nath (Karanga HS School) and Chaynika Nath (Bahana College) were awarded first, second and third prizes respectively. The prizes were cash awards sponsored by Dr Anju Majinder Konwar, Associate Professor, Doomdooma College, in memory of her mother Jaymati Konwar.

Deben Nath in his acceptance address said that he had to come to receive the prize on behalf his daughter as she (Mrinali) could not come because of her examination. He further said that the award was the fifth such literary award that Mrinali had received so far. Everybody was greatly touched when Deben Nath, who is on the verge of superannuation with a meagre income, said, “How can I refuse not to come here? Wouldn’t she feel discouraged then?”

This revelation of a duty-bound father came on an occasion like Silpi Divas observed all over Assam to commemorate the death anniversary of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala who, according to Sudhkantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika, was a strict disciplinarian. Even while taking him (Bhupen Hazarika, a school student then) to Kolkata for recording of a disc on Joymati, he made it point to give him regular homework there just to keep his promise made before his father Nila Kanta Hazarika who wished that his son’s study and singing should go hand in hand.

Along with the observance of Silpi Divas, a flower show competition was also held. Minu Gohain, Jyostna Buragohain and Banti Sonowal were given the first, second and third prizes respectively.
