GUWAHATI: The state government of Assam is ready to distribute the Dr Banikanta Kakati Merit Award to deserving candidates from an event to be hosted in Guwahati city on Wednesday, November 30.

Students and their family members started arriving at the event venue since the morning of Monday for the event that is scheduled to commence at 2 PM. The location has been mentioned to be the Veterinary College Ground located in Khanapara of Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will be present for the event along with Education minister Ranuj Pegu.

The Dr Banikanta Kakati Merit Award was introduced to encourage girls from the state to study harder and strive for better results in the board examination. The award has a certificate and a two-wheeler vehicle. The vehicles are registered in the name of the student.

This year the students who managed to score more than 60 per cent (First Division) on their boards will be receiving this award from the state government of Assam. The education department had already published a list of 29748 students who scored more than 60 per cent this year and an additional 6062 students who scored above 75 per cent. Thus bringing the total number of awardees this year to 35810.

In the first phase of the distribution of these awards, eligible candidates from the districts of Kamrup and Kamrup Metropolitan will receive their two-wheelers today. While the eligible students from the districts of Nalbai, Darang, Nagaon and Morigaon will receive their certificates in today's event.

The first students to receive this award belonged to the 2020 batch of board exams. 22,245 eligible girl students from the 2020 batch got the award. Thereafter following the protests and requests of students who passed the exams in the previous years, the awards were given to those 5,028 girl students from the 2018 and 10,132 students from the 2019 batches who managed to clear the criteria.
