GUWAHATI: Dr. Navanil Barua, a senior doctor at GNRC Hospitals in Guwahati, has been acquitted of all charges related to the heinous Dispur hit-and-run case that shook the city in 2021. This acquittal comes after the Kamrup district sessions judge found the allegations against him to be false and baseless.

The case dates back to November 2021 when the Dispur police submitted a charge sheet in court following a hit-and-run incident. Model Rajkanya Baruah, allegedly in an inebriated state, had struck nine laborers beneath an under-construction flyover on the night of October 1.

Dr. Navanil Barua initially faced arrest by the Dispur police on the grounds of allegedly protecting the accused model. He was accused of providing a 'fake' medical report and admitting her to the ICU of the hospital. At first, Dr. Barua claimed not to know Rajkanya Baruah, but their WhatsApp conversations contradicted this assertion. Dr. Barua further asserted that Rajkanya had threatened to commit suicide in the hospital if he did not admit her to the ICU.

This case took a legal turn when Rajkanya Baruah was sent to 14-day judicial custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court. However, in a subsequent twist, she was granted bail by the Gauhati High Court in March 2022.

The acquittal of Dr. Navanil Barua raises questions about the initial allegations and the evidence presented by the Dispur police. The judge's decision underscores the importance of a thorough and fair legal process in establishing guilt or innocence in cases of this nature.

Dr. Navanil Barua, a senior doctor at GNRC Hospitals in Guwahati, has been acquitted of all charges in the Dispur hit-and-run case that occurred in 2021. The judge's ruling followed a lack of substantial evidence to support the allegations against him, shedding light on the complexities of this high-profile case.
