Sivasagar: Dr. Surajit Giri, a respected anaesthesiologist at Demow Model Hospital in Assam’s Sivasagar district, tendered his resignation citing emotional distress following an alleged incident of humiliation by ACS officer and magistrate Parishmita Dehingia.

The episode unfolded during a critical caesarean operation when Dehingia reportedly summoned Dr. Giri and questioned his dedication, allegedly accusing him of negligence. The doctor, who was attending a woman in active labour at the time, described the magistrate’s behavior as “insulting and deeply upsetting,” especially after 18 years of selfless service.

Known for his groundbreaking work in snakebite treatment, Dr. Giri has saved more than 3,000 lives and assisted in over 7,000 surgeries, often operating in high-risk, underserved regions. His resignation stirred widespread public outrage, with citizens, colleagues, and social organizations rallying in his support. Many described the magistrate's actions as a misuse of authority and a disservice to a man regarded as a hero in rural healthcare.

In a heartfelt social media post, Dr. Giri voiced his dismay, stating that such treatment not only undermines his dedication but also threatens his mission to eliminate snakebite fatalities in Assam.

Following appeals from the public and intervention by the state’s Health Minister, Dr. Giri agreed to withdraw his resignation. “If the Sivasagar District administration wants me to continue, I will serve the people,” he affirmed—reinstating hope in a system many feared had failed one of its finest.
