SILCHAR: Silchar is gradually gearing up for its first Corporation election as the new Municipal Commissioner has already been appointed. The district administration officially published the Draft Electoral Roll for ward number 1 to 42 under the corporation.
Sristi Singh, IAS, after assuming the charge of the Municipal Commissioner, said that within next week, the signboard bearing ‘Silchar Municipality Board’ would be replaced by a new one with ‘Corporation’ nomenclature. The Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, during his last visit to Silchar a week ago said that the first-ever Corporation election would be held in October.
The term of the erstwhile Silchar Municipality Board expired in 2020 and since then there had been no elected body in the second largest city of the state. Silchar had been upgraded as a corporation in 2021, but elections could not be held following court cases challenging the inclusion of certain areas. However, finally the 28-ward Municipality Board was upgraded as 42-ward Corporation.
The Draft Roll has been meticulously prepared as per Rules 5 to 10 of the Assam Municipal Corporation Election Rules, 2022. It is based on the updated Assembly Electoral Roll as on January 1, 2025, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the State Election Commission.
To facilitate public access and scrutiny, the Draft Electoral Rolls have been made available for inspection at multiple locations during office hours on working days. These include the Office of the District Commissioner, Cachar, the Silchar Municipal Corporation Office, designated offices of the Registration Officer, all police stations within the corporation area; as well as on the OERMS portal and the official website of the district administration. Citizens may also contact their respective booth level officers (BLOs) for further assistance.
The district administration has announced that the last date for submission of claims and objections is June 26 while the deadline for their disposal is July 5. The Final Electoral Roll is scheduled to be published on July 8.
