Drive against vehicles charging high fares in Golaghat

GOLAGHAT: The officials of Golaghat District Transport Office in association with Golaghat Trafic Police branch launched an operation against the passenger-carrying vehicles at Rangajan on Saturday for charging hiked bus fare and violating of COVID-19 protocols.

Enforcement team checked every passenger-carrying vehicle and charged fine on those which violated the rules. During the checking it was found that night supers coming from Dimapur to Guwahati had taken bus fare up to Rs. 900 in place of Rs. 400. Similarly, the passengers had to pay Rs. 500 for traveling to Nagaon. Besides, the buses carried full passengers instead being allowed to fill only 50 per cent of the seats.

In this context, DTO of Golaghat Manuj Kumar Choudhary said action has been taken and fines were imposed on those who violated the COVID-19 protocols by carrying of full passengers instead of following the norms. The officials also warned the bus authorities not to take excess bus fare by taking advantage of COVID-19 pandemic.

Notably, in Golaghat district the people have to face a lot of problems in commuting from one place to another due to excess hike in fares.

The passenger-carrying vehicles like Tata Magic, Tempo, Gramya Taxi have been reported to charge two to three times higher than the normal fare from the passengers. Due to this move, the communication of village people to Golaghat town has decreased. As a result its impact falls on the day to day business of Golaghat town. According to sources, the fare of Tata Magic, Ape, and Tempos hiked their fares up to three times comparing to the fares before the lockdown. The vehicles were charing Rs. 100 to Rs. 150 in place of the actual fare of Rs. 20 to Rs. 30.
