BOKAJAN: In another significant development in the war against drugs, the Karbi Anglong police have injured a drug dealer while he was trying to escape police custody at Bokajan in East Karbi Anglong on Monday. Police also seized a huge quantity of drugs valued at Rs 10 crore in the black market.

As reported by police, based on specific information regarding the movement of drugs along the national highway 39, a team of Karbi Anglong police intercepted a truck bearing registration number MZ 08 3546 in front of SBI Khatkhati and recovered 115 soap boxes containing 1.6 kg heroin concealed inside the cabin of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, police arrested two occupants of the vehicle identified as Amir Hussain (22) and Salau Hussain (32) in connection with the recovery. Both are residents of Kakching district in Manipur. Preliminary interrogation revealed that the arrested duo brought the seized drugs from Manipur and was supposed to deliver the consignment to someone in Bokajan.

"Based on the revelations of the arrested individuals, we took Amir Hussain to identify the delivery point and in between, he complained of uneasiness and wanted to get down from the police vehicle to vomit. But, as soon as he got down from the vehicle, he pushed our police personnel and tried to escape. The police team then fired two rounds at Hussain and one bullet pierced through his leg. He was immediately shifted to Bokajan CHC for treatment and was later referred to DMC&H, Diphu for better treatment. His condition is stated to be stable," SDPO John Das said.

The operation was carried out under the leadership of Raju Duwarah OC Khatkhati PS and staff. The drugs were seized under the physical supervision of John Das, APS, SDPO Bokajan and was assisted by Insp Mwblik Brahma OC Bokajan.

This is the third incident of police firing in the war against drugs in Karbi Anglong. Earlier, an unidentified youth was shot dead in an exchange of fire with Karbi Anglong back in October, 2021. Police also recovered a 7.65 mm Pistol and 626 grams of heroin from his possession. Again in November, 2021 a drug dealer was injured in police firing after he tried to flee custody in Bokajan. However, smuggling continues unaffected through an intricate network and innovative ways despite the crackdown and risks involved. In the past week, the Karbi Anglong police have seized over 3.9 kg of Heroin worth over Rs 25 crore in the black market.
