BAKSA: Sensation prevailed after a police officer was allegedly attacked by a drunken youth in Puniya village (Udalguri Chuba) under Tamulpur Police Station in the district of Baksa.

According to Police Inspector Asim Bora, officer in-charge of Tamulpur Police Station, a person named Budang Boro returned from a quarantine centre in Kokrajhar after completion of his quarantine period. When Budang reached his village on Monday, the villagers did not allow Budang to enter his house. Receiving the information, second officer-in charge SI (Probation) Manoj Kumar Das reached the village and tried to create awareness about COVID-19 and told the villagers in presence of the gaon burha that as Budang had been allowed by the health department to come home, there was no fear of infection.

Suddenly a drunken youth, Swadnagswar Boro allegedly attacked SI Manoj Kumar Das, driver of the Police Station, Sashimohan Biswas and the gaon burha. As a result, SI Manoj Kumar Das and driver Sashimohan were seriously injured. The ring finger of Das' right hand was broken and driver Sashimohan sustained head injury. Both Manoj Kumar Das and Sashimohan Biswas were taken to Tamulpur Primary Health Centre. After providing primary treatment, with the help of two local reporters Dipak Kumar Pathak and Utpal Deka, Manoj Kumar Das was shifted at night to a private hospital in Guwahati. The accused youth managed to escape from the spot. On Tuesday morning, Swadnagswar Boro surrendered in Tamulpur Police Station. A case has been registered against him and interrogation is on.
