DU Ragging Victim Anand Sharma to Undergo Critical Spinal Operation Today

A complicated spinal surgery is scheduled to be performed on Anand Sharma in a private hospital in Dibrugarh on Thursday. Anand is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital's ICU since Sunday.

DIBRUGARH: A complicated spinal surgery is scheduled to be performed on Anand Sharma in a private hospital in Dibrugarh Today.

Anand Sharma is the first semester student of Dibrugarh University, who jumped from the second floor of Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Chatra Nivas (PNGB) hostel last week to escape severe ragging by his seniors.

Doctors at the private hospital where the operation will be carried out said a team of expert surgeons will perform the spinal surgery. Anand is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital's ICU since Sunday.

Dibrugarh University (DU) vice-chancellor Jiten Hazarika had visited Anand at the hospital on Wednesday morning, when he said Anand would be airlifted to Delhi for undergoing the surgery at AIIMS. However, the hospital's doctors later said it would be too risky for the patient to be airlifted or moved.

"The patient has suffered multiple fractures in his hand, leg and spine. His spinal cord has broken in several places and moving him out would be fraught with risk. We have scheduled the operation at 10am on Thursday," proprietor of the private hospital Nirmal Sahewalla said.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already assured all possible help for Anand's treatment by the government. The CM, however, came down heavily on the DU administration for their failure to tackle the ragging incident, following which the university has taken strict action against the alleged perpetrators and the wardens of the hospital.

The VC had also appreciated the CM's offer for help as well his admonishment on the way the entire fiasco has been handled by the DU authorities. He further promised action against the erring officials as well as the students involved.

On Wednesday, DU authorities suspended three wardens of PNGB hostel where the incident took place and expelled four students for a period of three years for their involvement in the ragging of Anand Sharma.

The expelled students are galab Deka, Kamaleshwar Chutia, Museum Phukan and Pusang Kham Baruah.

The students have also been debarred from taking admission in any other institution for a period of three years.

VC Prof Hazarika promised to probe into any administrative lapse on the part of the university and said that a high-level committee will be formed for the purpose. He also assured financial help from DU for Anand's treatment and also his future studies.

"We will look into administrative lapses, if any. We have suspended the three wardens of the PNGB hostel — Dibyajyoti Dutta, Abu Mustak Hussain and Palash Dutta. A high-level inquiry committee will be formed to investigate the incident. We are aware that the CM has expressed his disappointment. We will take every step to weed out the menace of ragging from our university campus" the VC said.
