In light of recent landslide disasters, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma cautioned devotees against going into Nilachal hill at night as the annual Ambubachi Mela got underway at the Kamakhya temple on Sunday.
Three or four separate locations on the hill have reported multiple landslide accidents in the past 15 to 20 days. According to a Kamrup (Metro) district administration official, PWD (Roads) have implemented safety precautions, and SDRF and NDRF staff are ready to react quickly in the event of a landslide.
The temple will reopen at 3:19 am on June 26 after closing at 2:56 pm tonight. For the four-day Ambubachi Mela, thousands of sadhus and devotees have flocked to the temple grounds. Speaking to the crowd during the Ambubachi Mela's opening ceremony, Tourism Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass predicted that over 10 lakh devotees will visit Ambubachi this year.
Five stalls have been set up for welcoming the devotees who are traveling from outside the state, he said. Additionally, he said, each devotee traveling from outside the state will receive a specially created welcome letter. About 5000 workers, working in three shifts, have been deployed by GMC to supervise the cleanliness aspect of Ambubachi.
