Dyke breaks, Silchar faces worst flood

SILCHAR: Though the water level of Barak River remained static at 21.38 metres at Annapurna ghat in Silchar, the overall flood situation in the southern Assam worsened further on Thursday. Newer areas of Silchar town were inundated on Thursday. A small embankment at Madhurband Bhagadahar was broken resulting fresh flooding in the new Silchar area. On the other hand, due to overtopped and submergence of Silchar-Badarpur section of NH 53 at Panchgram Sinking zone area by flood water, the important road was closed for all types of heavy vehicle. AC Mandal, Executive Engineer of PWD NH Division said, this road would remain closed till further order.

Ashok Singhal, Guardian Minister of Cachar arrived here by a Air Force copter with relief materials. He inspected various spots as well as relief camps. Later Singhal held an emergent meeting with various departments and monitored the supply of essential commodities.

Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, on the other hand, visited Karimganj, where 4603 person were affected on Thursday to monitor the flood situation.
