Earth Day programmes by Aaranyak sensitizes masses

GUWAHATI: An array of activities were conducted in Assam on Earth Day by Aaranyak, the organization for conservation of biodiversity.

Approximately 56 students participated in an orchid plantation initiative as part of an environment awareness programme organized by Ujani Sadiya HS School, Tinsukia district, and Aaranyak, which was presided over by Kamal Borah. Participants brought orchids from their own gardens.

Another programme was conducted by Aaranyak's Eastern Assam Zone in conjunction with National Green Corps, Tinsukia district and Makum College Eco-club in which a contest was held on a closely-related subject, and student participants were rewarded for their efforts. In Dibrugarh district, Earth Day 2022 was celebrated at Lekai ME School along with a nature protection group, Irab-Kirab. An art competition was held followed by an environment sensitization event.

'Amar Bagisa' initiative has been launched at the PIRBI Community nursery, Chandrasing Rongpi village, in partnership with Chandrasing Rongpi Memorial High School (CRMHS) in Kohora, Karbi Anglong as part of a programme with Aaranyak. Using gardening as a medium for understanding biological science among school children, Amar Bagisa was initiated to enhance interest of the students in biological science and strengthen the concept of "learning by doing". The school marked Earth Day by planting saplings of flowering plants inside its grounds by involving 60 students.

One For Change, a film by National Geographic featuring our senior Wildlife Biologist and popular figure Dr. Purnima Devi Barman, was released this Earth Day. Dr. Barman was featured for her widely known community-based conservation work in Assam, alongside nine other changemakers. Furthermore, a joint event was hosted by Sivasagar Girls' College and Aaranyak's Eastern Assam zone that focused on the land use and land cover issues in Sivasagar district, including prevailing superstitions and snake bite prevention techniques.
