EC Lets off Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma with Warning for Violating MCC
ECI on Monday issued a show-cause notice to Sarma for violating the model code while campaigning for assembly bypolls in the state.
Guwahati: The Election Commission has let off Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma by giving warning and cautioning him and directed him to strictly follow the provision of Model Code Of Conduct which he reportedly violated during campaigning for the October 30 assembly bypolls.
The order of ECI reads that, the Commission, has carefully considered the matter and the documents/materials before it concerning budget announcements and ongoing schemes, and taken note of Dr. Sarma's submission of seeking unconditional apology from the Commission in case of any inadvertent commission/omission of any provision of the Model Code of Conduct and is of considered view that Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Star Campaigner for Bharatiya Janta Party has acted in contravention to the spirit of the advisory/instruction issued by the Commission vide its letter dated 07.01.2007 concerning Model Code of Conduct.
"Now, therefore, the commission issues warning to him and cautions him to be more careful and exercise restraint in future and strictly follow the provisions of model code of conduct, while making public utterances," the order read.
The commission on Monday had issued a show-cause notice to Sarma for violating the model code by promising roads and other development projects while campaigning for assembly bypolls in the state.
On Tuesday Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma submitted his written reply to the ECI over his alleged violation of the code of conduct during campaigning for the upcoming bye-elections. Following a complaint lodged by the APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee), the ECI has issued notice to Sarma for his alleged violation of code of conduct during the poll campaign.
Sarma has filed his reply to the CEO (Chief Electoral Officer), Assam, before 5 pm on Tuesday, which was forwarded to the ECI, said official sources.
