Doomdooma: Former professor, litterateur, social activist and a prominent citizen of Digboi, Madan Mohan Choudhury passed away on Monday morning at AOD Hospital, Digboi. He was 84 and was suffering from kidney-related ailments. Born at Pakowa village in the Nalbari district in 1938, Choudhury had his primary education at Pakowa village and passed his matriculation examination from Nalbari Gordon High School in 1956. He did his graduation from Cotton College and masters from Gauhati University in political science. In 1967, he joined as lecturer in Political Science at Digboi College and retired as head of the department in 2000. He was also associated with various developmental activities of Digboi along with his wife Pranati Choudhury. A prolific writer, Choudhury always tried to reflect the real picture of the lives of the downtrodden and working class people of the society. He was one of the founders of the Digboi branch of Natun Sahitya Parishad and Bharatiya Gananatya Sangha (Indian People's Theatre Association). Choudhury was the president of the state committee of Natun Sahitya Parishad for two terms. He was also an active member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He also tried to eradicate superstitious beliefs among the people and worked to spread scientific temperament in the society. He leaves behind his wife and three sons, besides a host of relatives. As per his wish, Choudhury's body was donated to the Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh for medical research through Elora Vigyan Mancha.
