GUWAHATI: Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 12 presented the second day of the three-day State Assembly session.

Speaking at the session, Assam state finance minister said that the price of petrol and diesel in Assam will be reduced by Rs. 5.

The revised rates will be effective from 12 February midnight.

Currently, the price of petrol in Guwahati stands at Rs 90.94 while that of diesel is at Rs 84.82.

Earlier, the minister stated that the price of petrol, diesel, and liquor will come down in Assam from February as the state government will withdraw additional Covid related taxes from next month.

State's Finance, Health and Education Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "All the additional Covid taxes imposed during the COVID-19 epidemic will be withdrawn while I will present the vote on account".

Covid taxes on these products were levied by the government last year to revive the state economy devastated after the novel coronavirus hit the state and accounted to an increase of Rs 5 per litre on petrol and diesel.

In May, last year, Assam raised excise duty on Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) by 25% and in April the government increased the price of petrol from Rs 71.61 to Rs 77.46 per litre, and diesel from Rs 65.07 to Rs 70.50 per litre.

Himanta Biswa Sarma then said that the state government was losing revenue as the buying of fuel by customers had come down drastically. "To cover some of the losses we had to increase the prices. we are trying to protect our revenue by hiking the prices as earlier our monthly dues as royalty was Rs 166 crore but now we will get around Rs 50 crore."
