Dibrugarh: The spirit of Eid-al-Adha, known as Bakrid in common parlance, has gripped the Muslim community here. Known to be the ‘festival of sacrifice’, the festival will be observed here, along with the rest of India, on Monday.

In line with the impending festival, celebrations have already begun keeping with the solemnity of the day. Sacrifice being the distinctive feature of this Eid-al-Adha, all the people who could afford to offer sacrifice were seen making arrangements for the same. Other than that, vendors have laid out special makeshift shops for selling a wide range of items, including vermicelli, perfume (atar), kurta pajama and skull caps. Moreover, announcements have already been made regarding the timings of the special Eid namaaz.

While the prayers at Central Eidgah, Gramham Bazaar are slated to begin at 8 am, those at Alhaj Jalaluddin Ahmed Eidgah, Amolapatty are scheduled to begin at 8:45 am. Apart from the Eidgahs, the local mosques have also made arrangements for the special prayers in the morning hours.

Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى‎, romanized: ʿīd al-ʾaḍḥā, lit. 'Feast of the Sacrifice', IPA: [ʕiːd ælˈʔɑdˤħæː]) or Eid Qurban (Persian: عيد قربان‎), also called the "Festival of the Sacrifice", is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year (the other being Eid al-Fitr), and considered the holier of the two. It honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command. But, before Abraham could sacrifice his son, God provided a lamb to sacrifice instead. In commemoration of this intervention, an animal is sacrificed and divided into three parts. One share is given to the poor and needy, another is kept for home, and the third is given to relatives.

In the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, and lasts for three days. In the international (Gregorian) calendar, the dates vary from year to year shifting approximately 11 days earlier each year.
