BONGAIGAON: New Bongaigaon GRP arrested eight illegal Bangladeshi immigrants on Tuesday at New Bongaigaon railway junction.
The eight illegal immigrants have been identified as Babu Sheikh, Ashraful Hoque, Alamin Ali, Mamun Sheikh, Muhammad Ali, Ruhul Amin, Musharaf Ali and Asharul Hoque. All of them are from the Diyarmine Chowk area of Bangladesh.
Talking to the press, the migrants confessed that they came to India illegally. “We are from Bangladesh. On Sunday night, we started from Bangladesh and entered India on Monday through the Meghalaya border. Some agent transported us to India for Rs 8000 each,” they stated.
They also stated that there were no Border Security Force personnel at the Indo-Bangladesh border through which they entered. “The wall had fallen down earlier, and no security guard was there to stop us. So we crossed the border and entered India in search of jobs for livelihood,” they stated.
The Bangladeshi immigrants reached the New Bongaigaon railway junction on Monday night. GRP, on suspicion on Tuesday, enquired one of them and learnt their identity.
These eight immigrants had planned to go to Kerala in search of jobs. Police sources revealed that they suspect that many Bangladeshi illegal immigrants had entered India in search of jobs in the recent days. “A racket is operating in the border areas and trespassing these illegal immigrants. We are investigating. We may find some more clues in this regard,” said a police source. The eight illegal migrants have been sent to GRP’s border branch in Guwahati.
