Elephant Carcass Recovered from Nambor-Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary

Numaligarh: The carcass of an elephant was recovered from Nambor-Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary near Thuramukh-Dohoni area on Friday. Some local people from nearby villages reported witnessing an elephant carcass inside the forest. After receiving inputs, a team of foresters in leadership of Beat Officer of Juriadolong Forest Beat office KK Mazumder went inside the forest on Friday morning, but couldn’t locate the body. In the afternoon, two persons from nearby village appeared and stated that they had witnessed a dead elephant. They stated that they went inside the forest to collect some herbs and wild fruits, while they saw that an elephant was lying ahead of them. They said that they were first shocked as they had no clue if the elephant was dead or alive, but after assessing it for a while they got closer and found it to be dead.

The place where the carcass has been found is not easily accessible as one can only reach there only by crossing a deep water channel. Till the filing of this report the reason of the death of the elephant is yet to be ascertained. It is worth mentioning that multiple herds with huge number of elephants has been constantly roaming in the human habitat areas since last couple of months. Areas like Numaligarh-Morangi and Thuramukh are witnessing severe human-elephant conflicts. Residents of these areas along wildlife activists demanding adequate measures from the government and the Forest department to tackle the HEC problem as soon as possible.
