Numaligarh: Unnatural death of wild elephants in various places of Golaghat district has posed serious threat to the wild elephant population in the district. In another tragic incident, an elephant was electrocuted near Miripothar area under Bukhial Forest Beat in Golaghat district in the early hours of Thursday.

According to information provided by the locals of the area, the adult female elephant died on the spot after it came into contact with an 11,000-volt electrified pole. The high tension electric wires were disconnected from the pin insulator and fell on the T. channel. When the elephant touched the electrified pole, it died on the spot instantly. The local people said that a herd of about 30 to 40 elephants came out from the Upper-Doigrung Reserve Forest searching for food. Unfortunately, a female elephant of the herd died due to electrocution.

After seeing the elephant carcass on Thursday morning, local people immediately informed the Bukhial Forest Office. Following information, Forest Range Officer Pushpadhar Borgohain along with his staff reached the site and took stock of the situation. Further, Samsul Ali of CWRC, Panbari carried out the post-mortem of the elephant and the forest officials arranged to bury the elephant.

Rampant deforestation in the nearby Nambor-Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary (including Upper and Lower Doigrung RFs) has compelled the wild animals to scrounge for food in the residential hamlets, triggering conflict with humans and resulting in casualties on both sides. The cases of elephant death due to electrocution have been rising alarmingly in the district in recent times.
