Eminent teacher's initiative to popularise book reading habit lauded

MANGALDAI: In a unique and novel initiative to revive the book reading habit among the students and even the teachers; the recipient of the 'Idea Vodafone Excellent Teachers Award-2021', has decided to spend the amount of Rs one lakh that he had received along with the award in providing valuable books written by prominent writers to selected school libraries across the district. He offered the packets of books to 27 schools at a simple function in Dahi HS School near here on Friday.

Taking part in this unique function organized for the first time not only in Darrang district but also in the State, Superintendent of Police Er Sushanta Biswa Sarma highly appreciated the spirit of prominent teacher Shashangka Hazarika and hoped that this unique initiative would surely create a proper environment for making book reading a habit.

"Life is not qualified by fluent English, branded clothes or a lavish lifestyle. What matters is the number of faces who smile when they hear your name," he said adding that the name of Shashangka Hazarika would bring a smile to the faces of such persons.

In the function jointly anchored by media person Ganesh Dutta and Ranjit Nath, lecturer of Sipajhar College Dr Prasanna Kumar Nath, media person Bhargab Kumar Das and Finance secretary of AASU Khanindra Rajbongshi also delivered by speech describing the initiative of Shashangka Hazarika as an exceptional one. Noted artiste Pranjal Sarma enthralled the audience with his melodious songs and speech.

Earlier, the principal of Dahi HS School Kalpana Devi earlier inaugurated the function in the presence of eminent retired teacher Bhuban Goswami and a good number of teachers, students and media persons.

Mention may be made here that Shashangka Hazarika -- a teacher of Dahi HS School -- was conferred the National Award for Teachers by the President of India on the 'Teachers Day' celebration in 2018.

In a bid to add more attraction to create the reading habit, Shashangka Hazarika has also decided to arrange two leading newspapers - one in Assamese and the other in English published from Guwahati in the school library.
