PATHSALA: Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, the National Board for Wildlife India's proposal to use 98.59 hectares of land belonging to the Dehing-Patkai Elephant Reserve for extraction of coal by Coal India Limited has created a chaos in the entire region.

As students started to protest against the decision, Eric Development Society took the lead to organize all the students of Assam to create awareness and to protest in order to save the pristine rainforest of Assam.

The Dehing-Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary located in the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Assam is well known for its varied biodiversity. Along with various species of animals and birds, it is also the hub of orchids. As the project of coal mining will have a catastrophic effect on the biodiversity of Dehing Patkai and lead to climate change and loss of habitat for the wildlife, the Eric Development Society has urged all the people to protest against the decision.

Most of the students of Assam have joined the digital movement against the decision and are working to create awareness on various social media sites. The activists of the Eric Development Society have urged the Chief Minister of Assam, Prime Minister of India and Union Forest and Environment Minister to alter the decision and to save the pristine rainforest.
