GOALPARA: The Baladmari char areas, adjacent to the Goalpara town has been severely hit by the constant erosion of the Brahmaputra. The No. 3 sar of the area has been specially witnessing large-scale loss of cultivating land to the mighty river. The people of the areas have expressed their grief that neither Congress nor AIUDF have shown any interest to bring an effective and permanent solution to the problem.

"We are very poor people and vegetable farming is our only means of earning. If we continue losing our land to erosion where will we stay and what will we eat?," said a local farmer.

"We are the major vegetable producers and suppliers to the town. If our produce gets ruined by the river, certainly the vegetable price will go up," remarked another local man.

The Baladmari char, Chunari, Lakhipur and Jaleswar are some of the most affected erosion hit areas of the district. Several villages, schools, religious institutions, thousands of acres of agricultural land have submerged in these places in the last two to three decades and displaced thousands of people.
