'Every citizen can render service to ensure social justice'

LAKHIMPUR: "The Constitution of India has solemnly promised to all its citizens justices-social, economic and political; liberty of thought expression, belief, faith and worship; equality of status and of opportunity; and to promote among the all fraternity assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity of the nation. Following the ideals of the Constitution, every citizen can render service to ensure social justice," stated Diganta Hatibaruah, the columnist-cum-Head of the Department of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) in Lakhimpur on Friday.

He said so while delivering his lecture as resource person in the programme organized by Assam Anusuchita Jati Yuba Chatra Santha (AAJYCS) in order to observe the Constitution Day of the nation. The Lakhimpur district unit of the organization observed the event in Lakhimpur Telahi Kamalaboria College in association with the Department of Political Science to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. In 2015, the Union Ministry of Social Justice notified the decision of the Centre to celebrate November 26 as Constitution Day to promote constitutional values among citizens.

The programme organized on this occasion by the organization was inaugurated by Dr. Bubul Kumar Saikia, the Principal of the College, in the presence of students and local public. Taking part in the programme, Vice-Principal Dr. Ramesh Kumar Kakati explained the process of preparing the Constitution of India. He also threw light into the life of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the Father of the Constitution of India, his struggle of life and the challenges he faced while establishing himself as globally acclaimed leader.

On the other hand, resources person Diganta Hatibaruah explained the challenges faced by the Constitution Drafting Committee, led by Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, while preparing it. In addition, he highlighted Ambedkar's role in preparing the Constitution, ensuring equality and establishment of social justice. "The role of Ambedkar in the eradication of untouchability from the society will be memorable forever," he asserted while illustrating the concept of social justice. "The Constitution of India is unique in its contents and spirit. It has several salient features that distinguishes it from the constitutions of other countries. Social justice denotes the equal treatment of all citizens without any social distinction based on caste, colour, race, religion, sex and so on," he added

Another resource person, Pranjal Das delivered his speech on 'Measures for the eradication of untouchability as per the Constitution of India: an analysis'. AAJYCS central committee president Nripen Das took part in the programme as guest of honour. District unit president Dibyajyoti Hazarika, secretary Sumanta Das, North Lakhimpur subdivision unit president Dipak Basfor, secretary Sushants Das were among those who were present in the event.
