Sribhumi: The Forest Department has issued formal eviction notices to individuals illegally residing in the Cheragi Reserved Forest area of Sribhumi district, directing them to vacate the land within one month or face legal consequences.

According to the official notice, encroachers have erected unauthorized residential structures and engaged in cultivation activities within the protected forest, resulting in environmental degradation. “You are hereby informed that you have illegally trespassed into a reserved forest area, occupied forest land, constructed houses, and carried out cultivation, thereby causing damage to the reserved forest,” the notice reads.

The Forest Department has cautioned that failure to vacate the premises will lead to legal proceedings under Section 72(c) of the Assam Forest Regulation, which penalizes unauthorized occupation and misuse of forest areas. This may include demolition of illegal structures and further legal penalties. The residents have been given one month from the date of receipt of the notice to vacate the forest land voluntarily.

Officials emphasized that the move is part of a broader effort to protect Assam’s forest cover and curb encroachments in ecologically sensitive zones.
