Exposure visit of VLEWs from BTR districts of Assam

TEZPUR: An exposure of Village-level Extension Workers (VLEWs) from five BTR districts of Assam was organized by Extension Training Centre, Naltali, Nagaon, Assam under Department of Agriculture to KVK, Sonitpur, Napam.

A total of 35 VLEWs from BTR districts visited KVK Sonitpur with a view to acquire knowledge on recent agricultural technologies developed for the benefit of the farming community. The team was led by Hareswar Das, Principal, Extension Training Centre, Naltali, Nagaon with three senior ADOs. They visited Model Bamboo Nursery, Model Horticultural Nursery, Vermicompost Production unit, Azolla unit of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonitpur. Dr. Namita Dutta, Subject matter specialist (Soil Science), explained to them the varieties, uses and production procedures of bamboo, a project going under National Bamboo Mission.

Head (I/C), KVK, Sonitpur, Angana Sarmah in her session explained about various propagation techniques of horticultural crops, including rapid multiplication techniques of black pepper and pipoli, citrus leaf bud and stem cutting techniques, banana macropropagation for disease free and quality planting material generation at farmers level. Vermicompost production procedure was also explained to the participants along with practical demonstration.

Another group of 70 students from Solmara High School and Pachmail Girls' High School also visited KVK, Sonitpur under their hands-on training programme for skill development in the agricultural sector. Under this programme, sowing of dhaincha seeds as a green manuring crop was carried out in KVK, Sonitpur farm to make the students aware about soil fertility management through introduction of green manuring crops.

The students also participated in the Chief Minister's Institutional Plantation Programme by planting litchi and mango saplings in farms and a student procession rally was also conducted on the occasion of celebration of 75 years of Indian Independence Day and ongoing Har Ghar Tiranga programme.
