LAKHIMPUR: The fear of community transmission of COVID-19 pandemic looms large in Lakhimpur following the spike in the number of positive cases in the district.

On Thursday, a total of 62 COVID-19 patients were detected in Lakhimpur district. Of them a total of 29 cases got infected through contact with persons who were later detected positive. These patients have been identified as Chidanga Bhuyan (37), Gauri Baruah (28), Basanti Bhuyan (39), Simanta Bhuyan (39), Kritika Bhuyan (2), Achyut Bhuyan (60), Piku Bhuyan (58), Geet Bhuyan (23), Amrit Bhuyan (59), Deepa Bhuyan (55), Suranjita Bhuyan (26), Subhrajita Bhuyan (26), Anuj Bhuyan (58) Jadumoni Bhuyan (26), Basanti Bhuyan (52), Namrata Bhuyan (22), Abhijit Bhuyan (22), Deepsikha Baruah Bhuyan (37), Upasana Baruah (24), Baibhav Bhuyan (7) Rashmi Kakati (35), Bishnu Dutta (69), Chandra Prabha Dutta (60), Tridib Dutta (37), Pinku Dutta (27) Jahnabi Dutta (27), Luna Dutta (21), Surab Achajya (21) and Rukmini Achajya (49). Among them, 27 patients got infected after they attended two marriage ceremonies held at Garehaga and Bormuriya Tiniali. Notably, three women, who later tested positive for coronavirus, attended the two marriage ceremonies while violating home quarantine rule after their swab samples had been collected. Now it has come to light that more than hundreds of people assembled in the marriage ceremonies while the district administration granted permission for the gathering of only 50 people as per the Assam COVID-19 Regulations, 2020.

Surab Achajya, a pharmacist of North Lakhimpur Railway Colony, and his relative got infected after coming in contact with Joshoda Basfor.

The returnees who were detected positive for COVID-19 on Thursday are - Rubul Gohain (38), Dhan Bahadur Chetri (34), Keshav Das (22), Partha Pratim Bordoloi (22), Kamal Saikia (25), Moni Phukan (28), Kesharam Duwarah (35), Rubul Gogoi (39), Ananda Chabukdhara (25), Dolan Baruah (3), Hariram Gogoi (40), Pranab Jyoti Tamuli (33), Nitya Gogoi (29), Jintu Rayai (28), Parmeshwar Gogoi (33) and Jayanti Deka (28). From Madhabdev University, Priyanka Devi (21), Taniya Kumari (1), Maya Devi (21), Dinanath Giri (35), Raj Kumar Prashad (35), Abinash Gogoi (23), Bitupan Das (23), Ratul Saikia (27), Jitu Baruah (32) Suraj Gohain (37), Tuli Basumotary (27), Basab Sarkar (42), Angshuman Sarkar (5) and Chandra Garh (33) tested positive.

From the containment zone at Mohbol under Ghilamora BPHC, three patients were detected. They are- Padumi Gogoi (45), Kiran Gogoi (45) and Pallabi Gogoi (35).

In view of the increasing number of the COVID-19 cases and to arrest the spread of the pandemic and to secure public health, the district administration has declared Garehaga as containment zone under North Lakhimpur subdivision. The Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur has also declared inquiry into the violation of COVID-19 guidelines while holding the two marriage ceremonies. He informed The Sentinel that disciplinary action would be initiated after the inquiry against the violators of home quarantine guidelines.
