TINSUKIA: The onset of community transmission of coronavirus in Tinsukia district has set alarm bells ringing among health and district officials even as people in this commercial hub are yet to realize the gravity of the pandemic as they have been seen congesting the market places defying lockdown guidelines and COVID-19 protocol. The conscious citizens feel that such a situation in Tinsukia district, particularly in Tinsukia town, has arisen due to a section of businessmen and also laxity on the part of the police and district administration as Baghjan oil blast and the flood had kept them on their toes.

Out of seven fresh positive COVID cases detected on Thursday, as many as five persons were infected through community transmission as they had no travel history. The first case of community transmission was detected at Moliabari Digboi on May 29 (Santana Das). Sanjay Goel (42) of Bordoloi Nagar, Dipen Das (42) of Bozaltoli near GTB Academy, Tapan Baruah (53) of Hijiguri Gate No. 3, Nikunja Lata Kakoti (64) and Bipin Bhumij (23) of Kalibari Daspara were infected through community transmission while Akash Bhumij (20) and Nilu Moran (23) were quarantined at Rishi Bhavan, Tinsukia.
