First casualty due to COVID-19 in Tinsukia district reported

TINSUKIA: After the death audit report declared Dr PK Sarma's death due to COVID-19, Dr Sarma became the first casualty of coronavirus in Tinsukia district. His mortal remains were brought to Tinsukia from AMCH, Dibrugarh and he was cremated as per COVID-19 protocol in presence of the Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia and other health officials.

With the detection of another 41 positive cases on Wednesday and Thursday, the number of COVID patients swelled to 414 in Tinsukia district, that included four persons from CRPF Padumini, four from TCP Lekhapni, five from SP office, two each from ARC Doomdooma and Dholla Bazar, while majority of the others were returnees. In a span of five days, the number of COVID positive patients spiked from 321to 414. Meanwhile, normal functioning of Tinsukia district administration and police has been hampered after two ADCs and the SP were home quarantined.

As it was the first death case in Tinsukia district and no one had willingly came forward to perform the last rites of the deceased, five Pratirodhi Bondhu volunteers, who are actively involved in fighting COVID-19 in Tinsukia district, came forward to perform the last rites of the doctor. The volunteers carried the body of the deceased to the crematorium, Tinsukia and performed his last rites following all norms of COVID-19.
